Football: Sneak preview of 2016 season comes Saturday at Edison High

What makes Saturday’s seven on seven passing tournament at Huntington Beach Edison so intriguing is the talent that will be on display. Top teams and top players will get to show off their speed, competitiveness and discipline in an ideal setting just a month before official football practice begins.

And who can’t get excited with the likes of Corona Centennial, St. John Bosco, Mater Dei, Gardena Serra, Narbonne, Oaks Christian and Bishop Amat among the teams competing?

Here’s the link to the complete schedule of games that begin at 9 a.m., with the championship round starting at 1:30 p.m. Several teams will be missing players because they are attending The Opening in Oregon.

St. John Bosco will get to show off its new quarterback, Re-al Mitchell. There’s new players making their debut, such as receiver Terrell Bynum and defensive back Jaiden Woodbey.

Centennial has never won the Edison tournament but the Huskies made improvement last summer and don’t be surprised if they are ready to go behind new QB Tanner McKee and a group of new receivers.

Mater Dei usually is at its best early in the summer. This is the Monarchs’ last competition before taking a mandatory three-week break, so if they do well, that would be a surprise, but don’t count it out. Mater Dei has much better depth, and QB J.T. Daniels loves passing competitions. Beware of cornerback Quentin Lake, who has been a summer star.

Serra is loaded with top athletes and could be the favorite to win it all. Corona del Mar won several seven on seven tournaments early on and can’t be overlooked behind Cal commit Chase Garbers at quarterback. Cathedral has done well in passing competitions and has its share of college-bound prospects. Hart is another excellent passing team, led by QB Nick Moore.

The best pool has St. John Bosco, Oaks Christian, Narbonne, Tesoro and Hart. They’ll be playing their morning games at fields five and six. That’s where I’ll be hanging out.

Admission is free. Parking at the school will be $5. There will be In-N-Out-Burger truck.
