Friday night showdowns: Westchester-Fairfax, Chino Hills-Damien, Alemany-Crespi
Fairfax guard returns from knee surgery.
If I could be at three different gyms on Friday night for three different games, I would. That’s how good the matchups are in a battle for first place in league. Each one involves top 25 teams.
There’s No. 17 Westchester (15-5, 4-0) playing at No. 7 Fairfax (18-2, 4-0) at 6:30 p.m. in the Western League. There’s No. 1 Chino Hills (18-0, 3-0) playing at No. 14 Damien (18-1, 3-1) at 6:30 p.m. in the Baseline League. And there’s No. 11 Alemany (15-5, 5-0) playing at No. 6 Crespi (19-1, 5-0) at 7 p.m. in the Mission League.
The Westchester-Fairfax game has big City Section playoff implications. If either can sweep the other in league play, a No. 1 seeding for the Open Division playoffs is likely.
Chino Hills will encounter one of the best student cheering sections around at Damien, but the students aren’t playing, and they’re unlikely to slow down the Huskies, who have scored 100 or more points eight times this season. The state record is 18.
Alemany has given Crespi all kinds of trouble in recent years. The Warriors’ full-court press has caused problems. Crespi has won 19 consecutive games since a season opening loss to Peninsula.
The gyms should be packed, the crowds should be loud and the games should be great.
