Cleveland Indians defeat Angels, 10-7, in spring game

AT THE PLATE: Howie Kendrick responded to a 4-0 Angels deficit by lining a bases-loaded, full-count pitch to right field for a two-run single, an error allowing a third run to score. Bobby Abreu knocked in Kendrick with a single. Alberto Callaspo had an RBI triple in the seventh to answer a 7-4 deficit. Brandon Wood continued his positive late spring with two hits, a walk and two runs.

ON THE MOUND: Three of the four walks allowed by Scott Kazmir led to Cleveland runs on doubles by Chad Huffman and Austin Kearns. Reliever Jason Bulger gave up a three-run homer to Shelley Duncan in the seventh, breaking a 4-4 tie. Reliever Michael Kohn allowed an eighth-inning double that proved decisive. The Angels walked eight.

Angels’ Scott Kazmir improves pitch velocity but continues to struggle with walks

EXTRA BASES: Peter Bourjos produced his second bunt single in as many days. He’s practiced intensely with roving bunting coach Bobby Mitchell. “If you work on it, take it into the game,” Bourjos said. “If not, it’s a waste.” On the heels of a sensational Thursday catch in center field that Scioscia said only someone like Willie Mays or Paul Blair could ever make, Bourjos added an understatement that could help define the Angels’ season: “I try to use my speed to my advantage.”
