A week after being released by the Atlanta Braves and four days after signing a minor league deal with San Francisco, Dan Uggla was in the Giants’ lineup for the opener of a three-game series against the Dodgers on Friday night.

The Giants purchased Uggla’s contract from triple-A Fresno and started him at second base, a position where they have gotten little production this season. Marco Scutaro, who has missed all but five games because of back issues, was put on the 15-day disabled list, as was Ehire Adrianza, who has a hamstring strain.

Uggla averaged 29 home runs a year in his first eight major league seasons before hitting only two this year for the Braves, who released him July 18. The Giants signed him three days later.
