UCLA men lose in soccer playoff game; USC, Loyola Marymount women also fall

The UCLA men’s soccer team and the women’s squads from USC and Loyola Marymount had their seasons come to an end Sunday in the NCAA College Cup playoffs.

UCLA, which played in the national championship game last season, fell to Seattle, 1-0, on Hamza Haddadi’s goal in the 40th minute of a second-round game in Seattle.

The Bruins (11-9-1), outshot Seattle, 15-12, and forced Redhawk goalie Shane Haworth to make six saves.

But UCLA, the nation’s second-highest scoring team during the regular season, couldn’t find the back of the net.

The USC women fell, 2-0, to top-ranked Virginia in a third-round game in Charlottesville, Va.

Makenzy Doniak’s goal in the 40th minute gave the Cavaliers (19-1-2) a 1-0 lead.

Then, with the 11th-ranked Trojans (15-6-2) pressing forward in search of the tying goal, Alexis Shaffer put the game away for Virginia with a goal in the 81st minute.

For Loyola Marymount, the season ended in a shootout, with West Virginia’s Kailey Utley scoring three times in the second half of a 5-2 victory in Morgantown, W.Va.

Playing in the third round of the College Cup for the first time, Loyola Marymount (15-6-1) got a first-half goal from Raquel Angelone and one on an own goal Angelone banked in off a West Virginia defender.

But the fourth-ranked Mountaineers (19-2-1) matched that with first-half goals from Michaela Abam and Heather Kaleiohi before Utley blew the game open after the intermission, sending West Virginia on to the final eight of the national tournament.
