Russell Wilson is offensive MVP in Team Irvin’s Pro Bowl win

Russell Wilson threw three first-half touchdown passes to lead Team Irvin to a 49-27 victory over Team Rice in the Pro Bowl on Sunday at Honolulu.

The Seattle Seahawks star, who was the first player picked in the All-Star game’s draft, led scoring drives on three of Team Irvin’s first four possessions at Aloha Stadium. He threw touchdown passes of 14 and two yards to Atlanta Falcons teammates Julio Jones and Devonta Freeman, respectively, in the opening quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Wilson connected with Rams running back Todd Gurley for a 10-yard score.

Wilson was selected the game’s offensive most valuable player, and Seahawks teammate Michael Bennett was the defensive MVP.

The Detroit Lions issued a statement, saying the team stands by its previous statement that supported Calvin Johnson, after ESPN reported that the star wide receiver told family, friends and Lions Coach Jim Caldwell that he is retiring. ESPN did not name its sources. Johnson, 30, declined to say last season if he would restructure his contract, which calls for him to count $24 million against the salary cap in 2016.

Injured star left tackle Ryan Clady told the Associated Press he wants to remain in Denver and is willing to consider a restructuring of his contract. Clady, 29, is missing a Super Bowl because of injury for the second time. The eighth-year pro is due $9.5 million next season and $10 million in 2017.

In an AP survey conducted this season, 71 of 100 NFL players said they’ve seen other players allow injury concerns to affect what happens in a game. More than a third of those interviewed by the AP acknowledged they’ve made their own “career decisions,” allowing the way they play to be altered by such considerations as whether they could get hurt or exacerbate an existing injury.
