The Denver Nuggets have agreed to a five-year deal with restricted free agent Arron Afflalo.

The Denver Post first reported Monday night that the former UCLA guard had agreed to a contract that could be worth up to $43 million.

Nuggets Coach George Karl had been preaching the importance of bringing back Afflalo, the player he considered the “glue guy” of the team.

Afflalo averaged 12.6 points last season and took on a bigger leadership role once Denver dealt Carmelo Anthony to the New York Knicks in February. The team went 18-7 the rest of the way to make the playoffs.

This is the second deal Denver has orchestrated in a week. The team also re-signed center Nene to a five-year, $67 million deal.

Stojakovic to retire

Forward Peja Stojakovic, considered one of the best shooters in NBA history, has decided to retire six months after helping the Dallas Mavericks win their first NBA championship, ESPN.com and other outlets reported.

The 34-year-old Stojakovic, a three-time All-Star, told ESPN.com that the physical toll from a string of back and neck troubles convinced him it was time to retire despite interest from a several title contenders.

Stojakovic was instrumental in the Mavericks’ second-round playoff sweep of the Lakers last season, scoring 15 points in Game 3 and 21 points — including six-for-six shooting from three-point range — in the clinching Game 4 at Dallas.

Hayes’ deal voided

The Sacramento Kings voided Chuck Hayes’ $21.3 million, four-year contract Monday, saying the forward-center failed a team physical that forced his release.

Kings General Manager Geoff Petrie said in a statement that Hayes had asked the team to refrain from any further comment.

The team announced last week that a heart exam showed an abnormality that would require further testing. That came days after Hayes, who averaged 3.4 points and 4.7 rebounds in six seasons with the Houston Rockets, signed with Sacramento.

It is the second time in the last week that a medical exam on an NBA player revealed cause for concern. Boston Celtics forward Jeff Green will have surgery to repair an aortic aneurysm and will miss the entire season.

Allen says no sale

Paul Allen said he has no plans to sell the Portland Trail Blazers, shooting down recent talk that the billionaire Microsoft co-founder was planning to put the tea, on the market in the near future.

He would not, however, say how long he will keep the Blazers. Allen, who has owned the team since 1988, said numerous factors would play into that decision, including his health.
