Albert Haynesworth charged with misdemeanor assault in road rage incident

Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth has been charged with misdemeanor assault stemming from a road rage incident earlier this month.

Fairfax County, Va., police say the 29-year-old Haynesworth and his attorney appeared at a police station Saturday morning. Haynesworth signed a summons warrant charging him with assault and left. He’s scheduled to appear in court on March 31.

The encounter that led to the charge occurred on Feb. 2. Police said a 38-year-old man told investigators he was assaulted by the driver of a pickup truck who was tailgating him. The driver was later identified as Haynesworth.

Haynesworth’s agent, Chad Speck, has said the player is innocent and that his accuser is seeking fame and money.

Redskins’ Banks injured in stabbing

Washington Redskins kick returner Brandon Banks is one of two men who were injured in a stabbing outside a D.C. nightclub.

A Redskins spokesman confirmed that Banks was injured in the incident, which occurred shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday. He was admitted to a hospital in stable condition and remained hospitalized Saturday afternoon.

D.C. police say a man pulled a knife after a verbal argument and stabbed two men. Police did not release the names of the victims but say the other victim was hospitalized in critical condition. The suspect was taken into custody.

Raiders’ Bush arrested on suspicion of DUI

Oakland Raiders running back Michael Bush was arrested Saturday for suspicion of driving while intoxicated in southern Indiana, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal.

Titans hire Jerry Gray as defensive coordinator

Tennessee Titans Coach Mike Munchak filled one of the biggest openings on his staff by hiring Jerry Gray away from the University of Texas to become the Titans’ defensive coordinator.

Gray was hired by Texas, his alma mater, to be defensive backs coach and assistant head coach to Mack Brown last month.

Lindsey Jacobellis wins snowboarding title

Lindsey Jacobellis cruised to victory in the Snowboarding Grand Prix to capture the ladies U.S. title at Canyons Resort in Park City, Utah.

Jonathan Cheever was second in the men’s Grand Prix final behind Canadian Kevin Hill but as the top American finisher still claimed the U.S. crown.

Only American racers qualified for the U.S. title, while foreign racers competed for the $10,000 first prize.

Faye Gulini took third behind France’s Deborah Anthonioz and earned the U.S. silver medal. Chloe Banning was fourth in the Grand Prix but took bronze for the U.S.

Jayson Hale was fifth overall but finished second in the U.S. men’s standings followed by Kevin Leahy (sixth in the Grand Prix).

Canada’s Guay wins world downhill title

Erik Guay of Canada won the men’s downhill title at the world championships at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, ahead of pre-race favorites Didier Cuche and Christof Innerhofer.

Guay sped down the 3.3-kilometer Kandahar course in 1 minute, 58.41 seconds, beating Cuche — the World Cup downhill champion from Switzerland — by 0.32 seconds.

Italy’s Innerhofer, who won super-G gold on Wednesday, trailed Guay by 0.76 to place third after the top 30 racers had completed their run.

Emily Cook gets World Cup freestyle win

American Emily Cook scored a 93.06 Saturday in Moscow to earn the second World Cup freestyle victory of her career.

Cook, from Belmont, Mass., who has been competing with the U.S. team for 13 years, last won a World Cup event in 2008.

Olga Volkova of Ukraine was second at 85.83 and China’s Xin Zhang was third.

In the men’s event, Anton Kushnir of Belarus won with a score of 119.91, followed by Stanislav Kravchuk of Ukraine and China’s Guangpu Qi at 102.57. Kravchuk received the silver based on a vote of form judges.

Soderling, Tsonga to meet in finals at Rotterdam

Robin Soderling will defend his title against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final of the ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

The top-seeded Swede rallied from 4-1 down to beat Viktor Troicki, 7-5, 6-4.

The eighth-seeded Tsonga dispatched two-time finalist Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia, 6-4, 7-6 (6).

Almagro wins Brazil Open

Nicolas Almagro of Spain won his eighth ATP title, defeating Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine, 6-3, 7-6 (3), in the final of the Brazil Open at Costa do Sauipe.

Mattek-Sands loses, Clijsters advances

Fourth-seeded Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic thrashed American Bethanie Mattek-Sands, 6-2, 6-0, to reach the Open Gaz de France final in Paris, where she will face top-ranked Kim Clijsters of Belgium.

Clijsters, the Australian Open champion who has returned to the top of the world rankings during this tournament, beat third-seeded Kaia Kanepi of Estonia, 6-1, 7-5.

Hantuchova beats Zvonareva

Daniela Hantuchova defeated an angry Vera Zvonareva, 7-6 (3), 6-4, in the semifinals of the Pattaya Open in Thailand, ending her hopes of a third straight title.

Lagat breaks 21-year-old record in 2-mile run

Bernard Lagat set a new U.S. indoor record in the 2-mile run, breaking a 21-year old mark to become the American record-holder at the five distances from 1,500 meters to two miles.

Lagat finished in 8 minutes 10.07 seconds during a college meet at the Armory in New York on Saturday night, beating the mark of 8:15.02 that Doug Padilla set on Feb. 16, 1990, in Los Angeles.

The 36-year-old Lagat now holds the U.S. indoor marks in the mile and 2-mile and at 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000 meters. He is also the U.S. outdoor record holder for the 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000.
