Kings say Colin Fraser, acquired in Ryan Smith trade, is injured

The Kings say center Colin Fraser has an unhealed foot fracture and cyst that will require surgery and four months’ recovery, facts they contend they were unaware of when they agreed to take him from Edmonton last week in exchange for Ryan Smyth.

General Manager Dean Lombardi said Thursday the trade won’t be voided and that he and the Oilers are “trying to work it out.” That could mean the Kings get additional or altered compensation or that they accept Fraser as is.

The teams initially discussed sending Gilbert Brule and a draft pick to the Kings but that was derailed because Brule hadn’t been procedurally cleared to play after a concussion. Lombardi took Fraser instead.

A person familiar with negotiations told the Associated Press that German defenseman Christian Ehrhoff agreed to a 10-year contract worth $40 million with the Buffalo Sabres. … The Carolina Hurricanes re-signed forward Jussi Jokinen to a three-year contract worth $9 million.

Australian Adam Scott made a couple of long birdie putts on his way to a four-under 66 to share the lead with Hunter Haas in the AT&T National at Newtown Square, Pa.

Owners and players attend NFL talks

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFLPA head DeMaurice Smith met again Thursday, expanding talks on a pro football labor deal for the first time this week to include owners and players.

Sitting down with U.S. Magistrate Judge Arthur Boylan at a Minneapolis law firm were a handful of owners and players.

The Marlins will open their new $515-million Miami ballpark against the St. Louis Cardinals on April 4, a person familiar with next season’s draft schedule told the Associated Press

The downtown ballpark, which has a retractable roof, will be the first to open in the majors since Minnesota’s Target Field in 2010. The franchise is to be renamed the Miami Marlins next year.

The Colorado Rockies bolstered their infield by acquiring veteran second baseman Mark Ellis from the Oakland Athletics. The Rockies sent minor league right-hander Bruce Billings and a player to be named to Oakland for the 34-year-old Ellis and cash.

Called in by the Department of Justice to explain how major college football crowns a champion, the head of the Bowl Championship Series spent an hour and a half making a case for the much-criticized system.

BCS executive director Bill Hancock met Thursday with 10 officials from the department’s antitrust division in Washington.

The Justice Department initially raised its concerns with the NCAA about major college football’s postseason system, asking why there wasn’t a playoff. The department said previously there were “serious questions” about whether the BCS complies with antitrust laws.

The Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday traded forward J.J. Hickson to the Sacramento Kings for forward Omri Casspi and a future first-round pick.

Hickson’s days in Cleveland appeared numbered when the club drafted Texas forward Tristan Thompson with the No. 4 overall pick in last week’s NBA draft. Hickson has shown potential to be a star, but his on-court lapses frustrated Cavaliers Coach Byron Scott last season. Hickson averaged 13.8 points and 8.7 rebounds last season.

The 23-year-old Casspi averaged 8.6 points and 4.3 rebounds last season.

Miami Heat reserve guard Eddie House has decided to exercise the option clause in his contract will be back with the team next season.

The Boston Celtics have made a qualifying offer to forward Jeff Green, making him a restricted free agent.

Nuggets center Nene Hilario plans to opt out of the final year of his contract and become a free agent, the Denver Post reported.

Detroit Pistons CEO Alan Ostfield was fired by the team’s new ownership.
