AT THE PLATE: Aaron Miles, trying to beat out Juan Castro for a backup infield spot, had a standup triple; Miles has five hits in 15 spring at-bats. … Outfielder Xavier Paul struck out twice and has eight strikeouts in 13 at-bats. … Marcus Thames and Jay Gibbons, neither of whom has played in the field this spring, each had a hit. Manager Don Mattingly said he expected Thames and Gibbons to play left field this week.
ON THE MOUND: Chad Billingsley gave up one run in 3 2/3 innings — he hit 60 pitches before he could complete four innings — but Mattingly said Billingsley was “all over the place” in struggling to control his fastball. … Ramon Troncoso, displaying a sinker that failed to sink last season, retired all four batters he faced. He has pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings this spring, giving up one hit and no walks.
EXTRA BASES: Carlos Monasterios retired the side on three pitches in the eighth inning. … Outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. this spring: two walks, three hits, four stolen bases. … Shortstop Justin Sellers committed two errors on the first ball hit to him, bobbling the ball and then throwing it away. … Catcher A.J. Ellis drew a walk in his only plate appearance, threw out a runner and made a nice catch of a foul pop while keeping himself from tumbling into the Cubs dugout.
