Mater Dei takes on St. John Bosco in Trinity League matchup
Friday
Santa Ana Mater Dei (3-3, 1-0) at Bellflower St. John Bosco (5-1, 0-0), 7 p.m.: This Trinity League matchup should provide a clearer picture about which three teams will make the Pac-5 Division playoffs from the league. A Mater Dei win makes the Monarchs a virtual lock for the playoffs. A St. John Bosco win puts the Braves right in the middle of the playoff hunt. St. John Bosco, though, has been unable to come up with a breakthrough win in recent years. Its offensive line must be ready to handle a Mater Dei defense that recorded five sacks last week against Santa Margarita. The Monarchs have won three in a row since opening 0-3, and a victory would make them a prime challenger to Servite for the league title. The pick: Mater Dei.
Carson (3-3, 1-0) at Harbor City Narbonne (4-2, 1-0), 7 p.m.: This might decide the Marine League championship, but both schools have their hopes on a second meeting in the City Section Division I championship game. There’s lots of speed and athleticism, not to mention an intense neighborhood rivalry. Narbonne quarterback Troy Williams, only a junior, is developing into one of the best in the Southland. Carson has its one-two punch of receiver Darreus Rogers and running back Roger Jones. Turnovers and penalties will decide this one. The pick: Carson.
Rancho Cucamonga (6-0, 1-0) at Upland (6-0, 1-0), 7 p.m., FoxSportsWest.com: This is a true Baseline League title decider. Rancho Cucamonga has won its last four games against Upland. The Cougars have a determined defense, led by junior linebacker Vilami Latu. Upland will try to run the ball with Donta Abron Jr. Receiver-defensive back Kenny Lawler is another Upland weapon. The pick: Rancho Cucamonga.
