Rory McIlroy wins in playoff at Shanghai Masters

U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy won $2 million in the Shanghai Masters on Sunday, beating Anthony Kim with a par on the first hole of a playoff.

McIlroy holed a two-foot putt for the victory after Kim missed a three-footer.

McIlroy had a chance to win in regulation, but the 22-year-old star from Northern Ireland missed an eight-foot birdie putt. He closed with an even-par 72 to match Kim (69) at 18 under par on Lake Malaren’s Jack Nicklaus-designed Masters course.

The $2-million first prize is the richest in golf. Hunter Mahan (70) and South Korea’s Noh Seung-yul (73) tied for third at 13 under in the 30-man event.

Bo Van Pelt ran away with the Asia Pacific Classic in hot and humid conditions, birdieing five of the last eight holes for a seven-under 64 and a six-stroke victory at Selangor, Malaysia.

The winner of the PGA Tour’s 2009 U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee, Van Pelt finished at 23 under at the Mines and earned $1.3 million in the second-year event sanctioned by the PGA and Asian tours.

Fellow Indiana player Jeff Overton was second after a 69.

Fredrik Jacobson had a 68 to finish third at 16 under.

Sergio Garcia held off Miguel Angel Jimenez by a stroke in the Andalucia Masters at Sotogrande, Spain, for his second straight European Tour victory.

Garcia shook off two early bogeys with two birdies on a flawless back nine for an even-par 71 and a six-under 278 total at Valderrama.

U.S. wins 236 medals at Pan Am Games

From the first gold right up until the end, the United States was in the mix for medals in the Pan American Games at Guadalajara.

The Americans won the first gold of the 16-day multisport event when Heather Irmiger claimed the title in women’s mountain biking. They didn’t get a gold on the final day, but they did earn two bronze medals in Sunday’s three events.

In the medals table, the United States finished way out ahead with 92 gold and 236 overall. Cuba, which came on strong in the second week of competition, ended up in second place with 58 gold and 136 overall, and Brazil was third with 48 gold and 141 overall.

The Americans got their first bronze of the day in men’s basketball, beating the Dominican Republic, 94-92. The United States had not won a medal in the event since 1999.

The New York Yankees have made a contract offer to ace CC Sabathia, who has until Monday to decide whether to opt out of the $92 million and four years remaining on his current deal.

The offer was made over the weekend, the person familiar with the negotiations told the Associated Press on Sunday, speaking on condition of anonymity because no details were announced.
