UCLA linebacker Patrick Larimore forced to retire

Linebacker Patrick Larimore, UCLA’s MVP last season, will take a medical retirement after suffering his second concussion in four months, according to a person familiar with the situation who was not authorized to speak publicly.

Larimore was injured last week and underwent further tests Sunday night. He also suffered a concussion in spring practice.

The loss of Larimore thins out the Bruins in the middle of their defense. He was a two-year starter. Damien Holmes was moved from outside linebacker to the middle last week.

Outside linebacker Eric Zumwalt has not been returned to practice Monday after sitting out a week because of heat stroke. Inside linebacker Eric Kendricks has had limited participation the last four practices, though Coach Jim Mora said he is healthy.

Larimore, a team captain in 2011, had 81 tackles to lead the Bruins. He had a fumble recovery and also returned an interception against Oregon in the Pac-12 title game. He sat out the Kraft Fights Hunger Bowl after undergoing surgery on his thumb.

Larimore is the second UCLA player to retire since training camp began. Guard Chris Ward was forced to quit because of recurring back problems.
