Lydia Ko wins LPGA event at 15, eclipsing Lexi Thompson’s record

Lydia Ko, all of 15, eclipsed the one-year-old record of Lexi Thompson as the youngest winner on the LPGA Tour with a victory in the Canadian Women’s Open on Sunday in Coquitlam, Canada.

Ko, who was born in South Korea and lives in New Zealand, won the New South Wales Open in Australia at age 14 in January to become the youngest winner of a pro women’s event. That record was later broken by Brooke Henderson of Canada in June during a Canadian women’s tournament in Quebec.

Ko shot a five-under-par 67 on Sunday in British Columbia to win the Canadian Women’s Open by three strokes. Ko becomes the fifth amateur player to win a women’s professional tournament.

Thompson won the Navistar LPGA Classic last September to become the youngest women’s winner and first amateur victor in an LPGA event since JoAnne Carner in the 1969 Burdine’s Invitational.

Ko, who won the U.S. Women’s Amateur title two weeks ago, made birdies on five of the first six holes on the back nine Sunday to finish at 13-under 275 for the four-round event at the Vancouver Golf Club. Inbee Park shot a 69 to finish second.

Na Yeon Choi, the reigning U.S. Women’s Open champion, Chella Choi and Jiyai Shin tied for third at eight under.
