Nick Watney wins Barclays by three shots

Nick Watney salvaged a dismal season Sunday at the Barclays with a victory that could not have come at a better time.

Watney turned a two-shot deficit against Sergio Garcia into a three-shot lead in a decisive four-hole stretch around the turn at Bethpage Black, and no one got closer than two shots. Watney made a 10-foot birdie putt on the last hole for a two-under-par 69 to capture the opening playoff event for the FedEx Cup at Farmingdale, N.Y.

He wound up winning by three shots over Brandt Snedeker.

Watney, who won for the fifth time in his career, finished at 10-under 278. Tiger Woods closed with a 76 and tied for 38th.

Lydia Ko won the Canadian Women’s Open to become the youngest winner in LPGA Tour history and only the fifth amateur champion.

The 15-year-old South Korean-born New Zealander closed with a five-under 67 for a three-stroke victory at Coquitlam, British Columbia. She broke the age record of 16 set by Lexi Thompson last September in the Navistar LPGA Classic in Alabama.

Ko finished at 13-under 275 at the Vancouver Golf Club. Inbee Park shot a 69 to finish second.

Jay Don Blake won the Boeing Classic for his third Champions Tour title, beating Mark O’Meara with a birdie on the second hole of a playoff at Snoqualmie, Wash.

Blake and O’Meara shot matching four-under 68s that left them tied at 10-under 206.

Scotland’s Paul Lawrie marked his return to the European Ryder Cup team after 13 years with a four-shot victory in the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, Scotland.

Briscoe wins at Sonoma

Ryan Briscoe got past Penske teammate Will Power out of a pit stop at Sonoma, Calif., and held off the two-time defending champion for his first IndyCar victory since 2010.

After Power led for most of the race, Briscoe slipped into position for his seventh career victory when Power was caught in traffic following a scary crash for Sebastien Bourdais and Josef Newgarden.

Both drivers apparently avoided serious injury when Bourdais lost control on cold tires and slammed Newgarden into a protective barrier.

Noriatsu Osaka hit three homers and tripled, and Japan limited Goodlettsville, Tenn.’s potent lineup to two hits in a 12-2 victory in the Little League World Series title game at South Williamsport, Pa.

Betfair Hollywood Park officials told the California Horse Racing Board that they can’t commit to racing next fall.

The board asked track officials to commit to staging its spring-summer meet from late April to mid-July 2013 and its fall meet in November and December 2013, but Hollywood Park President Jack Liebau said they can’t commit to the fall meet that far in advance.

In NFL news, 38-year-old receiver Terrell Owens was released by the Seattle Seahawks, part of the league-mandated roster reductions from 90 to 75 players.

Peyton Manning was close to perfect in his final exhibition tuneup, throwing his first two touchdown passes for the host Denver Broncos in a 29-24 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Tim Tebow got New York Jets fans fired up with a 20-yard run in the fourth quarter but threw an interception three plays later, and the Carolina Panthers held on for a 17-12 victory. The Jets (0-3) still haven’t scored a touchdown through three exhibitions.
