Long Beach State improves to 3-0 in Big West play

Larry Anderson led four Long Beach State players in double figures with 20 points as the 49ers improved to 3-0 in the Big West Conference with an 81-68 victory at Cal State Northridge on Saturday night.

The 49ers (10-6 overall) won easily despite a four-for-12 shooting night from Casper Ware, who had 12 points.

Josh Greene led the Matadors (4-9, 1-2) with 15 points.

at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 73, Cal State Fullerton 67: Chris Eversley scored 18 points off the bench and the Mustangs (10-6, 1-2 Big West) ran off 18 consecutive points in the first half to pull away from the Titans.(10-5, 2-2), who were led by Kwame Vaughn with 18 points.

UC Irvine 70, at UC Davis 55: Michael Wilder scored 20 points and Chris McNealy 17 as the Anteaters (6-10, 3-1 Big West) got their first conference road sweep in six years.

The victory gave UCI its first Big West road sweep in six years, as the Anteaters won at Pacific, 73-69, on Thursday.

Wilder hit 7 of 11 field goals and had three assists as UCI improved to 6-10 overall and 3-1 in the conference. The Anteaters have won four of their last five games.

UC Riverside 64, at Pacific 57: Phil Martin scored 29 points for the Highlanders (8-8, 2-1 Big West), making four of six three-pointers.

at Portland 53, Pep-?perdine 43: The Waves shot only 32% and Kevin Bailey scored 15 points to lead the Pilots (5-11, 2-1 West Coast Conference). Taylor Darby scored 14 points and Jordan Baker had 12 for Pepperdine (7-8, 1-3).

Despite its own shooting woes (38%), Portland managed to grab a 17-point lead (42-25) nine minutes into the second half. The Waves cut the deficit to 47-39 with six minutes left, but errant shooting hampered their comeback effort.

Loyola Marymount 79, at San Diego 68: Drew Viney scored 20 points and Ashley Hamilton added 16 as the Lions (9-7, 2-1 WCC) tied a season high with 11 three-pointers.

Loyola Marymount (9-7, 2-1 WCC), which shoots 33% from three-point range, made 55% to win for the third time in four games.

Freshman Johnny Dee scored 24 points, including six three-pointers, for the Toreros (5-10, 0-3), who have lost six in a row.

WOMEN

USC 72, at Arizona 67: Briana Gilbreath had 17 points and four teammates scored 10 apiece as the Trojans (8-6, 2-1 Pac-12) earned a sweep in the desert.

Davellyn Whyte had 23 points and 13 rebounds for the Wildcats (12-3, 1-2).

USC led by as much as 16 in the second half before Arizona closed to within three in the final minute before Ashley Corral made two free throws with seven seconds to go.

UCLA 64, at Arizona State 48: Markel Walker had 15 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and three steals as the short-handed Bruins (7-8, 2-2) topped the Sun Devils (10-4, 1-2) for only their second win in eight games.

Playing the last 30 minutes with seven players, UCLA got 22 points from Thea Lemberger and 16 points and eight rebounds from Rebekah Gardner.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 51, Caltech 36: Jodie Burton became the 15th coach in Division III history to win 500 games.

The Athenas put the game away with a late 15-2 run after missing 22 shots in a row at one point.
