Chad Billingsley scratched from Sunday’s game with ‘elbow pain’

Pitcher Chad Billingsley was scratched from his scheduled start Sunday against the San Diego Padres due to “elbow pain” in his right throwing arm, Manager Don Mattingly said.

Billingsley was scheduled to have an MRI exam Sunday and the Dodgers hope to have the results by Monday.

Chris Capuano (9-4) replaced Billingsley in the lineup, and Nathan Eovaldi (1-5) was scheduled to pitch Monday night in the opener of a three-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies at Dodger Stadium.

Mattingly said Tuesday’s starting pitcher has yet to be selected. Clayton Kershaw then would start Wednesday.

With a 4-9 record, the right-handed Billingsley frequently has struggled this season and his 4.30 earned-run average is highest among the team’s five starting pitchers.

Mattingly said Billingsley told him the pain had “been going on a little bit but he looked at it as normal stuff,” and that Billingsley wanted to start Sunday’s game.

“My only issue with it all, and I talked to Chad about it, is not letting somebody know so we could be paying attention to this thing,” Mattingly said. The training staff “can’t really help you if you don’t talk to them.”
