Chasson Randle leads Stanford past Arizona State, 85-65

It has been a good week for Stanford thus far.

On Sunday, the Cardinal beat rival California, denying the Bears a share of the Pac-12 Conference title.

On Wednesday the Cardinal hitched up to guard Chasson Randle and rolled to an 85-65 victory over Arizona State at Staples Center in the first round of the Pacific Life Pac-12 Conference tournament.

Randle scored 30 points, 27 in the first half. He sat out the final 10 minutes to rest for the Cardinal’s rematch with the Bears in the quarterfinals Thursday night.

“I was just trying to complete plays and my teammates did a good job of finding me in the right spots,” Randle said. “I really didn’t know how many points I had. I was just playing basketball.”

Randle scored 13 points to get the Cardinal (21-10) off to a 22-10 lead nine minutes into the game. He made six of eight shots and was five for six on three-pointers in the first half. He also made 10 of 12 free throws, as Stanford led, 50-30, at halftime.

“They were pretty much the aggressor from the start,” Arizona State Coach Herb Sendek said. “We ran into a fantastic performance by Randle. We were never able to regroup.”

Arizona State never got closer than 13 points in the second half.

Aaron Bright scored 11 points and Jarrett Mann 10 points for Stanford. Chanse CreeKmur had 13 points for Arizona State (10-21).

“Randle had a night that he is going to remember for a long time,” Stanford Coach Johnny Dawkins.

Oregon State 69, Washington State 64: Oregon State made seven of 10 free throws in the final two minutes. Devon Collier made two free throws to break a 60-60 tie, and the Beavers (18-13) ground out the victory from there.

Washington State (15-16) had trouble with Oregon State’s inside game. Collier made seven of eight shots and scored 19 points. Joe Burton made five of seven shots and scored 15 points off the bench.

The Beavers jumped out to a 22-8 lead in the first seven minutes but were unable to sustain that momentum. The Cougars shot 68% in the first half and led, 39-38, at halftime.

Washington State made only seven of 25 shots in the second half. The Cougars’ Reggie Moore made only three of 16 shots in the game.

Brock Motum had 18 points and Marcus Capers 14 for Washington State.

Colorado 53, Utah 41: Despite being held scoreless for more than nine minutes of the second half, the Buffaloes advanced to a quarterfinal matchup against Oregon.

Andre Roberson scored 20 points and Carlon Brown 15 for Colorado (20-11).

Utah’s Dijon Farr made a three-pointer at the first-half buzzer to keep the Utes (6-24) close, 25-23.

Colorado extended its lead to 35-25 before it went cold, Utah cutting the lead to two points.

Brown, a transfer from Utah who played at Riverside King, scored on a put-back to keep the Buffaloes ahead, 37-33, with 6:39 left.
