Coaching can be a headache sometimes

Countless times, Ventura St. Bonaventure Coach Todd Therrien has proved to be hardheaded, but Friday night, he literally took it to another level.

In the second quarter of his team’s 18-7 victory over Redlands East Valley, Therrien said he suffered a concussion when struck out of bounds.

“I wanted to stop the momentum, and my own receiver’s foot kicked me in the temple,” he said. “I got knocked to the ground, and they said I looked like Michael Spinks after Mike Tyson hit him.”

If there were an award for coach of the year after the first three football games of the 2012 season, Therrien would be a runaway winner.

For the Seraphs (3-0) to knock off Inland Division powers Corona Centennial and Redlands East Valley in consecutive games while putting their trust in untested 6-foot-4 sophomore quarterback Ricky Town is an impressive achievement.

Town passed for 340 yards against Centennial and was 11 of 17 for 85 yards with two passes intercepted while playing against a top Redlands East Valley defense. Town’s calm, cool and keeps getting better under pressure.

“I love playing against the best competition,” he said.

Most impressive, he keeps hanging tough when learning from the demanding Therrien.

“Being in his office every day since January, he’s a good teacher,” Town said. “He demands perfection. He can be a little challenging, but it’s for the best.”

And Therrien isn’t going to let a little bump to his head slow him down.

“I’m not missing practice,” he said.

In two weeks, St. Bonaventure faces No. 1-ranked Santa Margarita at Saddleback College.

Rising sophomore

Another sophomore quarterback off to a terrific start is Josh Rosen of Bellflower St. John Bosco. He passed for a school-record seven touchdowns in a 61-8 win over Santa Fe. He completed 18 of 26 passes for 312 yards. A.J. Holman caught seven passes for 160 yards and four touchdowns.

St. John Bosco (3-0) plays host to Los Angeles Loyola (3-0) on Friday night. Call it a “payback game” for St. John Bosco. Last season, a 3-0 Braves team was upset by Loyola, 28-14.

Magical night

When it comes to dream nights for a defensive lineman, junior Justin Green of Oak Park experienced it all Friday. He returned two interceptions for touchdowns, forced a safety and recovered three fumbles in a 39-14 win over Simi Valley.

New star

Junior running back Deven Boston of Buena Park is one of the newest stars. He has rushed for 824 yards and scored 14 touchdowns in three games for the Coyotes (3-0).

“He’s like an Earl Campbell-type, an old-school running back,” Coach Anthony White said.

Mighty Mouse

Estuardo Marcos, a 5-4, 154-pound junior rushed for 195 yards and scored four touchdowns in Hacienda Heights Los Altos’ 49-0 win over Hacienda Heights Wilson.

The previous week, he had kickoff returns of 98 and 95 yards for touchdowns against Los Angeles Salesian.

“People say I look short, but I never feel short,” he said.

Kicker to watch

Mclean Emanuel of Venice made a 52-yard field goal against Westlake Village Oaks Christian and also repeatedly boomed kickoffs into the end zone.
