Worries disappear quickly for Clippers’ J.J. Redick in first game back
Thirty-six seconds into his return from an injury that sidelined him for six weeks, Clippers shooting guard J.J. Redick scored on a 15-foot jumper off a pass from Blake Griffin.
Fifteen seconds later, Redick drove down the lane for a layup, another sign that his broken right wrist and torn ligaments on the side of the wrist that kept him out of 21 games were just fine.
Redick made four of his first five shots against the Lakers Friday night on his way to a 19-point game.
“That was fun,” Redick said after the Clippers whipped the Lakers. “I was obviously out a long time so the worry was that I would just take a little bit of time to kind of find a rhythm. But to get the rhythm in the first four minutes was surprising, but very nice.”
And to think Redick was worried about how he would play for the first time since he was injured Nov. 29 at Sacramento.
He even complained some.
“[Friday] before shoot-around, I was talking to J.J. and he was like, ‘Man, I don’t want to come in and play 15 minutes and have like one shot and one rebound,’ ” Griffin said. “So after like four minutes into the game, I looked at him like, ‘You happy now!’ ”
Griffin was sitting next to Redick after the game when he told that story, leaving both of them cracking up.
Redick had 10 first-quarter points, missing only one of his six shots.
“Obviously, you saw that first four minutes or whatever it was, he was just knocking down shots,” Griffin said. “He just puts pressure on them. He’s constantly moving.
“Even if he’s not getting shots, it’s the movement. You always have to be aware of where he is. So he opens up a lot of things for us.”
Redick said he didn’t even have a problem adjusting to playing without All-Star point guard Chris Paul (separated right shoulder) and instead playing with Darren Collison.
“I try to play with a lot of energy and I try to play with a lot of movement,” Redick said. “If a guy doesn’t find me, he’s going to eventually find me. I’m going to keep moving. We’ll pick up some stuff. I’ve already been in his [Collison’s] ear this week about some things. So I’m kind of looking forward to developing that chemistry with him over the next few weeks.”
Clippers get some down time
The Clippers now have four days off before they play Wednesday night against the Dallas Mavericks at Staples Center.
Coach Doc Rivers even gave his team Saturday and Sunday off, but the Clippers will be back at practice Monday and Tuesday.
“It’s a fine line, really. I think we all are welcoming these two days,” Griffin said. “I know J.J. is going to be in the gym a little bit.”
