Chinese speedskater Wang Meng injured, unlikely for Sochi Olympics
One of short-track speedskating’s biggest names, Chinese star Wang Meng, will probably miss the 2014 Sochi Olympics after breaking her right ankle in training.
Wang reportedly collided with a teammate in a turn. She is expected to undergo surgery to repair tibia and fibula fractures in the ankle.
“If she receives this kind of surgery, Wang will have to be sidelined for at least six to eight weeks,” Liu Yasen, a Chinese weightlifting team doctor, told the Xinhua news service.
That would preclude defending her 500-, 1,000- and 3,000-meter relay titles when the Winter Games begin on Feb. 7.
Wang won the 500 at the 2006 and 2010 Games. Her 1,000 and 3,000 relay victories came in 2010.
