2014 Sochi Paralympics: U.S. skier Tatyana McFadden wins silver

A welcome dose of snowy weather did not slow U.S. cross-country skier Tatyana McFadden at the 2014 Sochi Paralympics.

McFadden won silver in the 1-kilometer sprint Wednesday -- finishing behind Mariann Marthinsen of Norway -- to earn her first medal after taking up the sport less than two years ago.

The Russian native, who was born paralyzed from the waist down, was adopted from a St. Petersburg orphanage at age 6 and grew up in the U.S.

The Paralympic world knows McFadden as a track-and-field star, but she decided to add winter sports to her repertoire.

In other action, German skier Andrea Rothfuss won the standing slalom and teammate Anna-Lena Forster won the sitting classification. American racer Laurie Stephens took bronze in the latter race.

Russia and Canada moved through to the semifinals of the wheelchair curling competition.

Wednesday’s storm followed a stretch of hot, slushy weather at the start of the Games, which are scheduled to run through March 16.
