Phil Jackson promotes Asus Zenbook

Here’s another reason why Phil Jackson probably won’t coach the New York Knicks.

He’s too busy having fun filming commercials. The latest ad, seen below, features Jackson touting the Asus Zenbook. In the wake of Apple’s popularity, it isn’t surprising Jackson would tout a PC: He’s a nonconformist. And in the wake of March Madness, it is surprising he would promote the NCAA tournament. He’s routinely called college basketball “a boys’ game” and refuses to watch it. Perhaps money can change a person’s thinking.

But it’s unlikely any amount of money would change his thinking with coaching the Knicks. Even if returning there would bring his career full circle to his playing days in New York, Jackson sounded content with his decision to retire after last season. The man loves to win championships, and he’s done it 11 times already. Yet, Jackson reached a point where the demand became too taxing.

He’s described the intense NBA travel schedule as “an unhealthy lifestyle.” Jackson struggled walking up and down the court and even standing up because of hip-replacement surgeries, a sore knee and kidney stones. He feared becoming a “prisoner” to the game.

So instead, Jackson has stayed in Los Angeles with girlfriend Jeanie Buss, the Lakers’ executive vice president. He’s working on his memoir on a storied coaching career that included 11 NBA championships, 13 NBA Finals appearances and 229 playoff wins. And of course he’s filmed commercials, promoting such outfits as Audi, Gatorade and now his self-themed laptop.

Yup, life seems to be good for Jackson. No need to change that by coaching a dysfunctional organization in the New York Knicks.
