Lakers fall to Bulls in overtime at buzzer, 102-100
Taj Gibson hit the game-winning layup at the buzzer, giving the Chicago Bulls a 102-100 victory in overtime over the Lakers on Monday.
After five-straight points from D.J. Augustin to give the Bulls a 100-98 lead, Nick Young hit a right, baseline jumper with six seconds left to tie the game.
The Lakers were able to stop an Augustin drive, deflecting the ball out of bounds with just 0.9 left on the clock -- but that was enough for Mike Dunleavy to inbound the ball to Gibson as he made his way to the basket.
The shot went off Gibson’s fingertips with less than two-tenths of a second before the buzzer.
Young led all scorers with 31 points, including three free throws at the end of regulation to force overtime.
Augustin scored 27 for the Bulls on 10-for-16 shooting, including 5 for 7 from three-point range.
Pau Gasol had 20 points with 19 rebounds, five blocks and three steals, but he also had five turnovers, including a pair in overtime that helped the Bulls pull ahead.
Joakim Noah finished with 17 points with 21 rebounds and six assists. Jimmy Butler also had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Chicago shot just 38.2% from the field, but had 19 offensive rebounds. The Lakers hit 42.2% of their shots with just nine offensive boards.
Jodie Meeks (16 points) and Ryan Kelly (13) also scored in double figures.
The Bulls also got 12 points from Gibson and Mike Dunleavy along with 11 from Carlos Boozer. Kirk Hinrich left after 19 minutes with a hamstring injury.
Kendall Marshall scored just three points with eight assists and four turnovers.
Playing on the second night of a back-to-back without five injured players (Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Steve Blake, Jordan Farmar and Xavier Henry), the Lakers fall to 16-26 on the season. Chicago, playing without Derrick Rose (knee), improved to 20-20.
The Lakers will travel to Miami to play the Heat (29-12) on Thursday. It will be their fifth game of a seven-game road trip.
The Bulls visit the Cleveland Cavaliers (15-26) on Wednesday.
Lakers 93, Chicago Bulls 93 (end of regulation)
Nick Young hit three free throws with 4.1 left on the clock to force overtime.
The Lakers held a 90-87 lead after six straight points from Pau Gasol. D.J. Augustin answered with a three-pointer, followed by a layup from Jimmy Butler.
Joakim Noah had a chance to give the Bulls a four-point lead with 7.4 seconds left, but split a pair of free throws, opening up the door for Young’s game-saving opportunity. Noah missed a difficult shot at the buzzer, leading to overtime.
Through regulation, Nick Young led all scorers with 26 points. D.J. Augustin had 22 for Chicago. Gasol contributed 18 points, 14 rebounds, five blocks and three steals.
Noah had 17 points, 18 rebounds, six assists and two steals.
Lakers 72, Bulls 69 (end of third quarter)
The Lakers held onto their lead through three quarters, both teams scoring 20 points. Nick Young led the Lakers with 19 points. Ryan Kelly, making his second start of the season had 13 as the Lakers shot 44.8% from the field.
The Bulls were led by Joakim Noah with 14 points and five rebounds. Kirk Hinrich is questionable to return after four points in 19 minutes, with a hamstring issue.
After struggling defensively in the first quarter, the Lakers improved significantly in the second and third, led by four blocks from Pau Gasol. The Lakers forward/center also notched a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
The Bulls shot just 39.1% from the field, but had 13 offensive rebounds to the Lakers’ five.
Lakers 52, Bulls 49 (halftime)
The Lakers took the lead in the second quarter, scoring 26 points while holding the Bulls to just 18.
Nick Young scored 17 points on 7-for-11 shooting. Jodie Meeks contributed 12 as the Lakers shot 51.3% from the field and 42.9% from three-point range (6-14).
Joakim Noah led the Bulls with a first-half double-double, finishing with 11 points with 10 rebounds. Chicago shot just 39.6% from the field, finishing with 49 points in the half despite a 31-point first quarter.
Bulls 31, Lakers 26 (end of first quarter)
Jodie Meeks hit a three-pointer with 22 seconds left to close the Lakers within five after a quarter in Chicago against the Bulls.
The Lakers shot 47.4% from the field, led by nine points from Meeks.
Chicago shot 50% from the field, led by six apiece from Carlos Boozer and Joakim Noah.
The Lakers did some damage at the free throw line, hitting six of seven attempts. The Bulls made just two of three.
Pregame
The Lakers (16-25) have a chance to win their third row with a visit the Chicago Bulls (19-2) on Monday.
The Bulls have recently climbed back into the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference despite playing without Derrick Rose (knee) and Luol Deng (traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers).
The Lakers are still without a long list of players out of action including Kobe Bryant (knee), Steve Nash (back), Steve Blake (elbow), Jordan Farmar (hamstring) and Xavier Henry (knee).
