76ers beat the Lakers, 111-104, for second road win of season

The Philadelphia 76ers won only their second road game of the season by finishing off the Lakers, 111-104.

The Lakers overcame a 13-point deficit to take a 97-94 lead with 5:46 left in the game. The 76ers responded with a 17-7 run to improve to 9-21 on the season.

Philadelphia forward Thaddeus Young led all scorers with 25 points and he collected nine rebounds. Evan Turner added 22 points for Philadelphia, which shot 41.1% from the field.

The Lakers struggled with their shooting, making only 36.9% from the field while turning the ball over 22 times. The 76ers had only 11 miscues.

Guard Nick Young led the Lakers with 26 points off the bench, although he shot only 6 of 21 from the field and committed six turnovers.

Jordan Hill (18 points and 13 rebounds) and Shawne Williams (11 points and 10 rebounds) notched double-doubles for the Lakers.

Williams missed a crucial, wide-open three-point shot with 20.9 seconds left and the Lakers down 107-104.

Seven-foot Pau Gasol sat out with an upper respiratory infection. Forward Xavier Henry, who has been helping run the point, left late in the first quarter with a strained right knee. He’ll have an MRI exam on Monday.

Point guard Kendall Marshall played his best game as a Laker with eight points and three assists.

The Lakers have lost five in a row to fall to 13-18 on the season. They’ll have a chance to break the streak on Tuesday when they host the Milwaukee Bucks (6-24).

The Sixers (9-21) travel to Denver to play the Nuggets (14-15) on Wednesday.

76ers 86, Lakers 77 (end of third quarter)

The Lakers looked overmatched in the third quarter, getting outscored by the 76ers, 34-25, and trail by nine points entering the fourth quarter.

Power forward Jordan Hill gave the Lakers an inside force with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Guard Nick Young had score 18, but he’s missed 11 of 14 shots. The Lakers as a team have shot only 34.9% from the field.

Meanwhil, the 76ers have gotten 18 points from forward Thaddeus Young and 17 from center Spencer Hawes.

Philadelphia shot only 39.7% from the field but took 10 more shot attempts than the Lakers. The Sixers had 10 turnovers through three quarters, eight fewer than the Lakers 18.

Lakers 52, 76ers 52 (halftime)

The Lakers hit back-to-back three-point shots to close the second quarter to pull even with the Philadelphia at the half at 52.

Despite shooting only 34.9% from the field and committing 13 turnovers, the Lakers made up a nine-point deficit after Kendall Marshall and Nick Young each made shots from beyond the arc in the final 33.5 seconds of the quarter.

Philadelphia forward Thaddeus Young led all scorers with 13 points. Evan Turner had 10 for the Sixers, who shot 37.3% from the field.

Guard Jodie Meeks paced the Lakers with 12 points, while guard Nick Young had nine.

Marshall backed up Jordan Farmar at point guard after Xavier Henry strained a knee and left the game. Henry will have an MRI exam on Monday.

Lakers 22, 76ers 20 (end of first quarter)The Lakers started the game against the Sixers quickly, opening with a 12-2 run while holding Philadelphia to 10% shooting from the field.

It didn’t last.

The Sixers answered with an 18-4 run to take a four-point lead. By the end of the quarter, the Lakers managed to reclaim a two-point advantage.

Guard Jodie Meeks had six points to lead the Lakers, who shot a paltry 27.3% from the field.

The Sixers were actually worse at 26.7% in an ugly 12-minutes stretch of basketball for both teams.

Pregame

The Lakers (13-17) will host the Philadelphia 76ers (8-23) on Sunday night at Staples Center.

The Sixers have won only one of 14 on the road this season. The Lakers have dropped four in a row and Philadelphia won’t necessarily be an easy win.

Philadelphia rookie point guard Michael Carter-Williams has impressed so far with 18.1 points, 7.7 assists and 3.1 steals a game.

Pau Gasol won’t play because of an upper respiratory infection. Chris Kaman, who has a sprained left ankle, is a game-time decision.
