Steve Nash may sit out the second game of the season when the Lakers visit the Golden State Warriors.

“It’s very possible he sits out,” said Coach Mike D’Antoni.

The Lakers open Tuesday, hosting the Clippers. They play the following night in Oakland.

“I haven’t talked to him. Obviously we’ll see how [Nash] feels in the next couple of days,” said D’Antoni.

After an injury-plagued first season with the Lakers, Nash still isn’t entirely healthy. Nearing the age of 40, he’s has been bothered this preseason by ankle and neck soreness.

D’Antoni will consider resting Nash throughout the season on back-to-back nights, picking and choosing which game is more advantageous for the Lakers.

“We’ll see where we are in the schedule, where we are in the standings,” said D’Antoni. “The idea is to cut down the numbers of games and keep the minutes consistent for him, but the number of games comes down.”

As of now, Nash will start on opening night. The final decision for the Warriors game may not come until Wednesday.

“We’ll look and see and talk about it,” said D’Antoni. “It’s hard to make a definitive answer right now.”

Jordan Farmar had a strong preseason for the Lakers after recovering from a calf injury. He and Steve Blake are capable of manning the point guard position when Nash sits out.
