Reds will bring back Bryan Price for a fourth season as manager

The Cincinnati Reds said Friday that Bryan Price will return next year for a fourth season as manager.

The Reds, last in the NL Central, and Price agreed to a one-year contract with a team option. The entire coaching staff also has been offered contracts for 2017.

Price was promoted from pitching coach to manager after the 2013 season and saddled with a rebuilding effort.

Price’s record in Cincinnati was 207-267 before Friday, including 67-92 this year. The Reds, though, have gone 35-35 since the All-Star break

Chicago Cubs General Manager Jed Hoyer and player development director Jason McLeod agreed to contract extensions through the 2021 season, mirroring president of baseball operations Theo Epstein’s deal two days earlier. . . . Alex Rodriguez returned to the field for the New York Yankees in his new role as an instructor, working with prospects at the club’s minor league complex in Tampa, Fla. . . .

Outfielder Matt Holliday, sidelined since breaking his left thumb Aug. 11, will be activated by St. Louis and could make his final appearance with the team this weekend, most likely as a pinch-hitter. The Cardinals are not planning to pick up their $17-million option on his contract for 2017.
