Mark Melancon agrees to deal with Giants

The San Francisco Giants agreed to a $62-million, four-year contract with closer Mark Melancon, pending a physical, General Manager Bobby Evans announced Monday.

Because Melancon was traded during the season, the Giants don’t have to give up their first pick in June’s amateur draft as compensation.

The Giants blew 32 save opportunities last season, the last in a 6-5 loss to the Chicago Cubs in Game 4 of a National League division series that ended San Francisco’s season. Chicago scored four runs in the ninth inning.

Beltran, Astros finalize deal

Carlos Beltran and the Houston Astros finalized a $16-million, one-year contract.

Beltran, 39, hit a combined .295 with 29 home runs and 93 runs batted in last season for the New York Yankees and Texas Rangers. The switch-hitter split his time as a designated hitter and right fielder.

In 19 seasons, the nine-time All-Star has a .281 batting average with 421 home runs and 1,536 RBIs.

Blue Jays get Pearce

The Toronto Blue Jays signed utility player Steve Pearce to a two-year contract worth $12.5 million.

Pearce hit .288 with 13 home runs in 85 games for Tampa Bay and Baltimore last season.

Phillies land Benoit

A person familiar with the negotiations said that reliever Joaquin Benoit and the Philadelphia Phillies agreed to a $7.5-million, one-year contract.

The person spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the agreement had not been announced.

Benoit, a 39-year-old right-hander, has had an earned-run average under 3.00 for six of the last seven years. He was 3-1 with a 2.81 ERA last season, including a 0.38 ERA after the Blue Jays acquired him from Seattle on July 26.

Farrell stays put

The Boston Red Sox exercised the 2018 contract option on Manager John Farrell.

Farrell won the World Series in his first season with the Red Sox in 2013 and led them to the playoffs last season. He has a 339-309 record in four seasons in Boston.

Classic players

Right-hander Max Scherzer, catcher Buster Posey and outfielder Andrew McCutchen are among the top players confirmed to play for the United States at the 2017 World Baseball Classic.

Major League Baseball announced the initial list of 30 players set for the tournament, which takes place in March. Among them are 24 All-Stars.

Also on the U.S. team are right-hander Chris Archer, third baseman Nolan Arenado and outfielder Adam Jones.

Defending champion Dominican Republic will have infielders Manny Machado, Robinson Cano and Adrian Beltre, designated hitter Nelson Cruz and pitcher Dellin Betances.

Felix Hernandez will pitch for Venezuela, which will also have first baseman Miguel Cabrera and outfielder Carlos Gonzalez on its roster.
