The Times’ Major League Baseball rankings
Here’s how The Times’ Bill Shaikin ranks the 30 major league teams this week:
1. OAKLAND: Trout or Cabrera? Try 3B Josh Donaldson, who has outhomered both and leads the majors in runs. (4)
2. TORONTO: 1B Edwin Encarnacion hit 16 home runs in May. The Royals hit 13. The Cardinals hit 11. (2)
3. SAN FRANCISCO: In 2000, Tim Hudson was second in AL Cy Young vote, going 20-6 with a 4.14 ERA. He began 2014 at 6-2, 1.75. (1)
4. MILWAUKEE: Carlos Gomez, not Ryan Braun, is Brewers OF in All-Star voting. He and Puig would be some fun together. (5)
5. DETROIT: Tigers shortstops have six extra-base hits. So do the Cubs’ pitchers. (3)
6. ANGELS: Record with Trout, Pujols and Hamilton all in starting lineup: 4-7. Record without all three in lineup: 28-21. (6)
7. MIAMI: That’s a creative bullpen solution: trade a second-round draft pick to add relievers Kevin Gregg, Bryan Morris. (9)
8. ATLANTA: Hard to tell Aaron Harang, Ervin Santana apart by stats but not salaries (Harang $1 million, Santana $14 million). (7)
9. SEATTLE: Robinson Cano, $240-million man, is ninth in HRs — on this team. He has two, same as tiny Astro Jose Altuve. (18) 10. WASHINGTON: Now in LF: 3B Ryan Zimmerman. Denard Span could be pushed out once Bryce Harper returns. (19)
10. WASHINGTON: Now in LF: former All-Star 3B Ryan Zimmerman. If Bryce Harper returns in CF and Jayson Werth stays in RF, Leadoff man Denard Span could be pushed out once Bryce Harper returns. (19)
11. N.Y. YANKEES: Masahiro Tanaka: 9-1 with a 2.02 ERA. All other Yankees starters: 14-16 with a 4.43 ERA. (10)
12. BALTIMORE: OF Nelson Cruz may go from Biogenesis suspension in ’13 to All-Star starter. How thrilled is Bud Selig? (16)
13. ST. LOUIS: Biogenesis alum Jhonny Peralta is batting .225 but leads team with 9 HR. Cardinals last in NL with 32 HR. (8)
14. TEXAS: Kershaw’s childhood friend and ex-Dodgers teammate Shawn Tolleson emerges as bullpen mainstay with 3.03 ERA. (11)
15. DODGERS: Their best defensive center fielders might be second baseman Dee Gordon and minor leaguer Joc Pederson. (13)
16. CINCINNATI: Dee Gordon, without the hype: 36 stolen bases, 4 caught stealing. OF Billy Hamilton, with hype: 22 SB, 7 CS. (27)
17. BOSTON: Andre Ethier or Matt Kemp would be an upgrade on any of the six current Boston OFs. Carl Crawford too. (24)
18. CHICAGO WHITE SOX: Attendance is at 1960 level, and owner Reinsdorf seeks veto power over next commissioner? (14)
19. PITTSBURGH: As players battle in division race management keeps prospect Gregory Polanco in minors to save $$. (15)
20. CLEVELAND: Hard to find in this era, but Carlos Santana has way more walks (44) than hits (29). He’s batting .162. (25)
21. HOUSTON: Progress? They went 15-14 in May, their first full month with a winning record since September 2010. (23)
22. ARIZONA: Mark Trumbo has played in 21 of Arizona’s 63 games yet is still second on team in HR, with 7. (28)
23. MINNESOTA: Ricky Nolasco, 31, Dodgers’ big trade pickup last July, has a 5.65 ERA in first year of four-year, $49-million deal. (20)
24. SAN DIEGO: Jason Lane played for Padres on Oct. 1, 2007, as an OF. Tuesday, he played for them as 37-year-old pitcher. (26)
25. COLORADO: Charlie Blackmon, the mystery OF who led NL All-Star voting the first week, hit .389 in April. Since then: .252. (12)
26. KANSAS CITY: 3B Mike Moustakas (.145) has the second-lowest batting average of any big leaguer with 100 at-bats. (17)
27. CHICAGO CUBS: The last time they had a winning record — in 2009 — Milton Bradley was their right fielder. (30)
28. TAMPA BAY: With worst record in majors, would they strike soon on trade of SP David Price? (29)
29. N.Y. METS: 50 Cent returns to Citi Field next Saturday — for a postgame concert, thankfully, not a ceremonial first pitch. (21)
30. PHILADELPHIA: First to worst: Attendance at Citizens Bank Park is down 15,000 fans per game. (22)
