Racing! A birthday is coming up for everyone

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter asking which is tougher to buy an entrant: The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile or the Kentucky Derby?

It’s almost birthday time for all horses, and in honor of all the 2 year olds turning 3, I was wondering if in that crazy game of breeding and buying horses, if it is easier to buy your way into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile or the Kentucky Derby.

And the answer, and there are lots of reasons why, is it costs more to buy a horse ready to run in the BC Juvenile.

Now, this is all a silly exercise in math and not meant to be a scientific study. But if you take the public purchase price of all the starters in this year’s Juvenile, the average was $413,333. And if you did likewise with the public purchase prices in the Derby, you would get $310,461.

Part of the reason is not every horse is mature enough to have a chance to run in the Juvenile, and by that point, there aren’t a lot of out-of-nowhere horses. In the Derby, you’ve got a more mature lot and a chance of finding a few underpriced gems.

Here’s a look at the public purchase prices in the Juvenile, by order of finish.

Good Magic, $1 million; Solomini, $270k; Bolt D’Oro $630k; Givemeaminit $20k; The Tabulator $460k; Hollywood Star, $550k; Firenze Fire, private sale; Hazit, $430k; Free Drop Billy, $200k; US Navy Flag, private sale’ Golden Dragon, private sale; Bahamian, $160k.

Now the Derby numbers, by order of finish.

Always Dreaming, $350k; Lookin At Lee, $70k; Battle Of Midway, $410k; Classic Empire, $475k; Practical Joke, $240k; Tapwrit, $1.2 million; Gunnevera, $16k; McCraken, private sale; Gormley $150k; Irish War Cry, private sale; Hence, private sale; Untrapped, $125k; Girvin, $130k; Patch, private sale; J Boys Echo, $485k; Sonneteer, private sale; Fast And Accurate, $85k; Irap, $300k; State Of Honor, private sale; Thunder Snow, private sale.

It goes without saying that Good Magic has the most Kentucky Derby points (24) with four months of racing to go. Bolt D’Oro (14), Solomini (14) and Enticed (12) are close behind. But, lots and lots of points to be awarded.

Of the top 10, Bolt D’Oro, Solomini, Greyvitos and McKinzie are all stabled in Southern California.

Santa Anita review

Pubilius Syrus, named after the long-dead Roman writer, drove through the stretch to best favorite Inscom by a head to win the $75,000 Eddie Logan Stakes for 2-year-olds going one mile on the grass.

“He runs hard every time,” winning rider Kent Desormeaux said. “We were loaded turning for home and he just kept after the leader. A very professional effort.”

The race was named after the legendary shoeshine person at Santa Anita.

“I used to buy my Racing Form from Eddie every day and I don’t think there was ever a day he didn’t greet me and thank me for being at Santa Anita,” said winning trainer Vladimir Cerin.

Sy, and we have no idea if anyone calls him that, paid $5.80, $2.80 and $2.40.

Santa Anita preview

It’s a nine-race card with three graded stakes, so in other words, it’s worth going out if you want to see some good horses. Two of the stakes are half of the day’s four turf races. The field-sizes look good except for the Robert J. Frankel Stakes, which only has six runners.

Let’s look at the stakes:

Robert J. Frankel Stakes: This $100,000 race is for fillies and mares over 1 1/16 miles on the turf. It’ll go off as the fourth race at about 2 p.m. Trainer Chad Brown has two of the favorites, no surprise there. The 2-1 morning-line choice is Elysea’s World, who has a full resume of graded stakes, none of which she’s won. Javier Castellano is giving up a day of racing at Gulfstream to come and ride this filly.

Brown’s other entrant is Penjade, at 5-2. She’s won four of five this year, her only loss, a fourth in her only graded stakes of the year. Irad Ortiz, Jr., also travels west to ride this filly.

American Oaks: This $300,000 race is for 3-year-old fillies on the turf at 1 ¼ miles. It’s the seventh race with a post around 3:30 p.m. Rymska gets the designated favorite’s position at 5-2. She is undefeated in three starts this year, all stakes. She finished fifth in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita. This is the horse that Ortiz really came west to ride. Brown also trains this horse.

Daddy’s Little Darling is 3-1 for trainer Kenny McPeek and jockey Mike Smith. She’s won once in five lifetime turf starts. New Money Honey is 7-2 for Brown and Castellano.

Midnight Lute Stakes: Masochistic, a 7-year-old gelding, is making his first start since May, and first for trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Drayden Van Dyke. He’s won eight of 16 starts lifetime but his career has been star-crossed to say the least. He’s won more than $850,000 but will best be remembered for being stripped of his second-place money in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint last year for a prohibited medication in his system, He’s the 5-2 second favorite. Late word from his owners, however, reported first by Jeremy Balan of Bloodhorse is that the horse will be scratched.

The favorite at 2-1 is Americanize for Simon Callaghan and Rafael Bejarano. He won the 7-furlong Damascus Stakes at Del Mar before finishing fourth in the Cigar Mile at Aqueduct. The 6 ½ furlongs of the Grade 3 $100,000 Midnight Lute should be a good distance for this 4-year-old gelding.

This race is the eighth, with a post around 4 p.m.

Bob Ike’s SA play of the day

NINTH RACE No. 11 Urban Bourbon (15-1)

Draw a line through his last race up a north, a nightmarish trip where he took up sharply twice before finishing dead last in a field of 12. Dropping into a mid-grade claimer for high-percentage trainer Billy Morey and going to top turf rider Kent Desormeaux, this one could spring a major upset despite the poor outside post.

Friday Result: Cascade Rock finished second in the 3rd race.

Ed Burgart’s LA pick of the day

EIGHTH RACE: No. 1 Apollitical Heart (5-2)

She is back with maidens after respectable fifth-place finish in last Los Al Two Million trial outing when facing futurity finalists Scoopie Jess and Jess My Kiss. She was sharp second in a maiden race two outs ago and was third three races back vs. two-time futurity third-place finisher The Revenant.
