Pac-12 roundup: Washington snaps losing streak against Oregon with 70-21 win

Jake Browning threw for 304 yards and a school-record six touchdowns and ran for two more scores to lead No. 5 Washington to a 70-21 victory over Oregon Saturday night in Seattle, Wash. The win snapped a 12-game losing streak against the Ducks.

Myles Gaskin ran for 197 yards and a touchdown for the undefeated Huskies, who have won nine straight games going back to last season. Dante Pettis caught eight passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns, while John Ross had nine catches for 94 yards and three scores.

Freshman Justin Herbert made his first college start and threw for 179 yards and two touchdowns for the Ducks, who continued their dramatic slide with a fourth straight loss. Oregon (2-4, 0-3 Pac-12) hasn’t lost four straight since the 2006 season.

Herbert was intercepted on his first pass of the game, and Washington went on to score on the ensuing series on Browning’s 1-yard touchdown run.

Washington (6-0, 3-0) upped the lead on Browning’s 3-yard TD pass to Ross. Rose also scored on a 15-yard pass from Browning as the Huskies built a 28-0 lead. Browning scored on a 7-yard keeper to put Washington ahead 35-7 at the end of the first half.

Pettis caught touchdown passes of 10 and 28 yards as the Huskies built a 63-21 lead in the opening minutes of the final quarter.

A local prospect out of Eugene’s Sheldon High School, Herbert is the first true freshman to start for the Ducks since Chris Miller in 1983. Graduate transfer Dakota Prukop started at quarterback in the Ducks’ first five games.

Oregon State 47, California 44 (OT): Quarterback Darrel Garretson ran 16 yards for a touchdown in overtime and Oregon State ended a 12-game Pac-12 Conference losing streak, beating California 47-44 in Corvallis, Ore. on Saturday night.

Garretson’s game-winning run came after Oregon State (2-3, 1-1) blew a 17-point, fourth-quarter lead and trailed briefly in overtime.

Ryan Nall ran for 221 yards and three touchdowns for Oregon State but left the game early in the fourth quarter with a leg injury. Garretson rushed for 105 yards and two touchdowns and completed 13 of 24 passes for 85 yards.

Oregon State ran for 474 yards, a school record against a Pac-12 opponent. The Beavers had a season-high 559 yards.

Davis Webb threw for 113 yards, well under his season average of 428.6 passing yards, for California (3-3, 1-2). Khalfani Muhammad ran for 165 yards and a touchdown while Tre Watson had 134 yards and two touchdowns.

No. 24 Utah 36, Arizona 23: Quarterback Troy Williams ran for two touchdowns and threw another, helping No. 24 Utah rally to beat Arizona 36-23 in Salt Lake City on Saturday night.

Utah (5-1, 2-1) trailed 14-12 at halftime after committing 11 first-half penalties, including eight false starts. Arizona (2-4, 0-3) scored on the first snap of the game when Brandon Dawkins connected with Shun Brown for a 75-yard TD pass, taking advantage of blown coverage that left Brown completely uncovered.

The Utes scored 26 straight points after falling behind 14-3. Williams got both of his running TDs in the second half and had 245 yards passing for the game. Armand Shyne also ran for a TD in the third quarter, while the defense tightened up and forced two second-half turnovers and allowed just nine points. Shyne finished with 101 yards on 19 carries.

The Utes moved into a tie atop the Pac-12 South with Colorado. They ended a four-game losing streak to Arizona. After beating Rich Rodriguez, Utah coach Kyle Whittingham has now defeated every active Pac-12 coach since joining the conference in 2011.

Washington State 42, No. 15 Stanford 16: Luke Falk threw for 357 yards and four touchdowns to lead Washington State to a second straight win over one of the Pac-12’s recent powers, 42-16 against No. 15 Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif. on Saturday night.

Falk connected with Tavares Martin Jr. twice in the first half and added second-half TD passes to Gabe Marks and River Cracraft to help the Cougars (3-2, 1-1) follow up last week’s 51-33 win over Oregon by ending an eight-game losing streak to Stanford (3-2, 2-2). The Ducks and Cardinal have combined to win the past seven conference titles.

That streak is in serious jeopardy this year as the Cardinal got blown out for the second straight game, losing in back-to-back weeks for the first time in six seasons under coach David Shaw. Stanford lost 44-6 at Washington last week. The Ducks are 0-3 in conference play.

Making matters worse for the Cardinal was the fact that last year’s Heisman runner-up Christian McCaffrey went to the locker room in the second half with an apparent injury and didn’t return to the game. McCaffrey came back to the sideline and had his helmet on, but didn’t re-enter the game. There was no immediate word on his health.
