Ohio State’s Urban Meyer and Clemson’s Dabo Swinney play friendship card at Fiesta Bowl
Reporting from Glendale, Ariz. — Never mind that No. 2 Clemson and No. 3 Ohio State will battle each other on Saturday night for a spot in college football’s national championship game.
The days leading up to their Fiesta Bowl showdown has been a lovefest between the respective coaches.
Ohio State’s Urban Meyer has talked about their long-standing relationship. Clemson’s Dabo Swinney has mentioned — repeatedly — that their wives are friends.
At a news conference on Friday morning, Meyer quoted Swinney who, in turn, reiterated that he has been studying Meyer’s book, “Above the Line,” for tips on defeating the Buckeyes.
The coaches became close over the years while taking annual Nike trips.
But when Meyer was asked for his favorite memory of their times together, he hesitated.
“What goes on at Nike, stays at Nike,” the Ohio State coach said. “That’s Phil Knight’s mantra.”
