Rams tape review: Patriots cut up the defense, Goff’s biggest plays come in garbage time
The Rams lost to the Patriots, 26-10, on Sunday, giving Tom Brady the all-time record for wins by a quarterback (201).
Each week we take a look at the tape and see what worked, what didn’t and what you might have missed.
What: Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount goes 43 yards to the house on fourth down
Down: Fourth and one
Time: 11:03 left in the first quarter
LeGarrette Blount (29) isn’t the easiest running back in the league to bring down. And on this play, after he gets going you can see he’s not going down until he gets to the end zone. The 6-foot, 250-pound back gets free on this play thanks to cornerback Trumaine Johnson (22) attacking the run and getting caught up in blocks from tight end Martellus Bennett (88) and full back James Develin (46).
The only Ram who has a chance to stop Blount before he gets to the end zone is safety Maurice Alexander (31), but he gets turned around and falls, allowing the train to keep rolling to the end zone.
What: Patriots QB Tom Brady throws a perfect back-shoulder pass for a touchdown
Down: Second and three
Time: 13:32 left in the second quarter
From the go, it looks like Tom Brady (12) had predetermined this throw to Chris Hogan (15) against cornerback E.J. Gaines (33). If you watch his head he doesn’t even try any sort of deception; he just looks the ball into his receiver.
Speaking of which, Hogan doesn’t get that much separation from Gaines as he streaks to the end zone. But Develin makes another appearance on the tape as he runs an out route. It’s interesting to note that Develin has exactly 11 career catches — only one this season — in his third year with the Patriots.
What: Rams WR Kenny Britt pulls a nifty move on the Patriots’ top corner
Down: Fourth and 11
Time: 2:23 left in the fourth quarter
Watch Kenny Britt (18) at the bottom of the screen on this play. Here he’s being defended by Malcolm Butler (21), who already had an interception at this point in the game, but he makes a move like he’s running an out-route to the sideline and loses the Patriots’ top cornerback.
Goff throws a deep ball his way and he’s off to the races — coming up just short of a touchdown, which we’ll look at next.
What: Rams WR Kenny Britt catches a one-yard touchdown pass
Down: Second and one
Time: 1:20 left in the fourth quarter
Jared Goff (16) rolls out to his right side on the naked bootleg and has two reasonable options on this play for a touchdown. He’s got tight end Tyler Higbee (89) open a yard or two deep in the end zone and an unguarded Britt cutting across the back of the end zone. Goff targets the Rams’ top receiver and puts points on the board in garbage time.
