Olympic gold medalist Aly Raisman says she was sexually abused by former USA Gymnastics doctor

Three-time Olympic gold medalist Aly Raisman is the latest woman to say she has been sexually abused by former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar.

Already in a Michigan jail awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to possession of child pornography this summer, Nassar is awaiting trial after being charged in February with sexually abusing nine gymnasts and also has been sued by more than 125 women and girls alleging abuse.

“I am angry,” Raisman told “60 Minutes” in an interview scheduled to air on Sunday. “I’m really upset because it’s been -- I care a lot you know, when I see these young girls that come up to me, and they ask for pictures or autographs, whatever it is, I just -- I can’t -- every time I look at them, every time I see them smiling, I just think -- I just want to create change so that they never, ever have to go through this.”

Raisman also told “60 Minutes” she spoke to FBI investigators about Nassar following the 2016 Rio Olympics. The 23-year-old gymnast said she first was treated by Nassar at age 15. According to CBS News, Raisman provides more details about the alleged abuse in her upcoming book, “Fierce.”

Last month, two-time Olympic medalist McKayla Maroney accused Nassar of molesting her for several years. On the same day Maroney made her accusation, Raisman posted a photo on social media of her hugging her former USA Gymnastics teammate.

In recent months, Raisman has criticized USA Gymnastics in light of the accusations against Nassar.

“Why are we looking at why didn’t the girls speak up? Why not look at what about the culture?” she said in the “60 Minutes” interview. “What did USA Gymnastics do, and Larry Nassar do, to manipulate these girls so much that they are so afraid to speak up?”

In a statement to “60 Minutes,” USA Gymnastics said it has made major changes in light of the allegations against Nassar, including new standards to “prevent inappropriate interaction” between athletes and adults and a policy that requires suspicions of sexual abuse to be reported.

“USA Gymnastics is very sorry that any athlete has been harmed,” the organization stated. “We want to work with Aly and all interested athletes to keep athletes safe.”
