Juan Uribe and son of Raul Mondesi make World Series rosters
reporting from KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Juan Uribe, who started the season as the Dodgers’ third baseman, could end it as a participant in the World Series.
The New York Mets on Tuesday added Uribe to their postseason roster, in place of rookie infielder Matt Reynolds. Uribe had not played in the first two rounds of the playoffs because of a chest injury.
Meanwhile, the Kansas City Royals added shortstop Raul Mondesi, the son of the former Dodgers outfielder, to their roster. Mondesi, 20, has not played above the Class AA level, and he could become the first player to make his major league debut in the World Series.
His father played in 1,525 games in the major leagues without ever appearing in the World Series.
The Royals dropped outfielder Terrance Gore, who sparkled as their designated runner last October. Although that performance helped encourage the Dodgers to open a “speed camp” in search of their own postseason designated runner, Gore had stolen just one base in the Royals’ 11 postseason games this October.
Mondesi stole 19 of 25 bases this season. He has not played since Sept. 18.
Uribe was traded from the Dodgers to the Atlanta Braves on May 27, after Justin Turner won the Dodgers’ third-base job, and from the Braves to the Mets on July 24. Kelly Johnson, who will serve as the Mets’ designated hitter in Game 1 on Tuesday, was traded with Uribe from Atlanta to the Mets.
Uribe has won two World Series championships, spaced five years apart -- with the Chicago White Sox in 2005 and the San Francisco Giants in 2010.
