‘Grandma Iaià’ becomes oldest Olympic torchbearer

We have a new Olympic record.

Aida Mendes, known as Grandma Iaià, became the oldest Olympic torchbearer on Thursday.

At 106 years old, Mendes took part in the Olympic torch relay in the northern Brazilian city of Macapà in lighting a cauldron. The official Brasil 2016 and Rio 2016 Twitter accounts documented the event.

Official documentation shows Mendes was born on Nov. 20, 1909, which indeed makes her the oldest Olympic torchbearer. The previous record holder was Alexander Kaptarenko, who was 101 at the time when he participated as a torchbearer in the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

This isn’t the only record-breaking title Mendes has under her belt. In August 2013, she reportedly broke the record of the oldest skydiver at 103, earning the title “extreme granny.” The previous record was held by Danish Estrid Geertsen, who was 100 years and 60 days old in 2004.
