Angels, veteran left-hander Sean Burnett agree to two-year deal

NASHVILLE -- The Angels fortified their bullpen Wednesday, agreeing to terms on a two-year deal at about $8 million with veteran left-hander Sean Burnett, said Jim Munsey, Burnett’s agent. The deal, which is pending a physical, includes an option for a third year at $4.5 million that can be bought out at $500,000.

Burnett was 1-2 with a 2.38 earned-run average in 70 games, striking out 57, walking 12 and giving up four home runs in 56 2/3 innings for the Washington Nationals last season. He had surgery after the season to remove bone spurs from his elbow but is expected to be ready for spring training.

The 30-year-old, who complements a sinking 90-mph fastball with a slider and changeup, fills a bullpen void left by Friday’s trade of right-hander Jordan Walden for Atlanta starter Tommy Hanson.

Burnett, who has been more of a left-handed specialist, joins what should be a much deeper and more talented Angels bullpen headed by new closer Ryan Madson, Ernesto Frieri, Kevin Jepsen and Scott Downs.

He will also be a natural replacement for Downs, the 36-year-old left-hander who is entering the final year of a three-year, $15-million contract.
