Boomer Esiason apologizes for Daniel Murphy C-section comment

Boomer Esiason apologized repeatedly on Friday for suggesting New York Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy’s wife should have scheduled a C-section during spring training so her husband wouldn’t have to miss any regular-season games for the birth of their first child.

“I want to say again on this radio show that in no way shape or form was I advocating anything for anybody to do, was not telling women what to do with their bodies. I would never do that. That’s their decisions. That’s their life and they know their bodies better than I do,” said Esiason, the former NFL quarterback who is a co-host of the “Boomer & Carton” CBS/WFAN morning radio show.

“And the other thing that I felt really bad about it is that Daniel Murphy and Tori Murphy were dragged into a conversation and their whole life was exposed and it shouldn’t have been and that is my fault. That is my fault for uttering the word ‘C-section’ on this radio station and it all of a sudden put their lives under a spotlight, and for that I truly apologize.

“I reached out to Daniel through intermediaries over there at the Mets, and to his credit, he answered all of the questions yesterday. I’m sorry he had to go through that. No man should have to go through that, and certainly Daniel Murphy who we both [Esiason and co-host Craig Carton] admire as a baseball player as much as anybody else.

“All I can say is I truly, truly feel terrible about what I put them through, so for that I certainly apologize.”

Murphy missed the first two games of the Mets’ season on Monday and Wednesday to be with his wife during and after the birth of their son, Noah. Major League Baseball rules allow up to three days of maternity leave.

Esiason said on the air earlier this week: “Quite frankly, I would have said C-section before the season starts. I need to be at opening day, I’m sorry. This is what makes our money. This is how we’re going to live our life. This is going to give my child every opportunity to be a success in life. I’ll be able to afford any college I want to send my kid to because I’m a baseball player.”

Another WFAN radio host, Mike Francesa, also criticized Murphy’s decision earlier this week. Francesa said Thursday he is standing by his comments.
