Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf: Favorite Dank wins
Breeders’ Cup day is usually not kind to favorites, but Dank beat the (short) odds to win the $2-million Filly and Mare Turf race at Santa Anita on Saturday. Dank withstood a blanket finish to win by 1/2-length.
It was Dank’s seventh win in 12 starts. The 4-year-old also benefitted from having her regular rider Ryan Moore in the saddle. Dank regularly runs in Britain and Ireland.
The winner paid $5.00, 3.40 and 2.80. Romantica returned 5.20 and 4.00 while Alterite paid 7.00 to show. Two lengths covered the first five horses at the finish.
“She had everything right today and I could ride her that way,” Moore said. “I didn’t have to take too many chances because she was the best filly in the race. She wasn’t as brilliant today as in her last race, but she ran a very good race today.”
Trainer Michael Stoute made his intentions clear for the horse.
“I’d like to keep her in training next year and I’m going to have to be quite persuasive,” Stoute said.
