Oklahoma high school player scores winning basket for other team

With an Oklahoma Class 3A state quarterfinal playoff basketball game on the line and a chance to beat a powerhouse opponent, Hugo High’s Trey Johnson scored on a layup to seal the victory -- for the other team.

Hugo was leading Oklahoma City Millwood by one point with 2.9 seconds left in the fourth quarter on Thursday night, needing only to inbound the ball and run out the clock.

Johnson received the inbounds pass with no defender around him and drove to the basket for a layup. But it was the wrong basket and Millwood ended up with a 38-37 victory at Oklahoma City Yukon High.

Yeah, baskets were hard to come by in this game. Johnson had scored only two points before his game-losing basket.

“Without a doubt, that’s the toughest locker room I’ve ever had to talk to,” Hugo Coach Darnell Shanklin told the Oklahoman.

Shanklin said Johnson became confused on the final play and didn’t realize he was driving toward Millwood’s basket.

“He gives you 100% all the time,” Shanklin said of Johnson. “Heart goes out to the kid because he feels bad. He feels really, really bad.”
