Fan makes half-court shot, but doesn’t get $50,000 prize

Alex Permann had a moment few of us ever have. For a brief time, he thought he had won $50,000. Then it was all taken away from him because he didn’t pay attention to the rules.

Permann was attending Sunday’s Missouri Valley Conference title game between Creighton and Wichita State when he was chosen to take part in the halftime contest. All he had to do was make a layup, a free throw, a three-pointer and a half-court shot in 24 seconds and he would win $50,000.

Permann made the layup, he sank the free throw. Then he ran out to half-court and made that shot. $50,000! The crowd went crazy. Permann jumped around the court, arms raised in triumph. But he had forgotten something: the three-pointer.

So, no $50,000 for Permann.

“There was a miscommunication, and I was given some instructions that didn’t match the instructions the announcer said,” Permann told USA Today. “I was so excited to be out there that I didn’t pay attention to what he said. I had in my mind what I was going to do before I went out there.”

Tournament organizers decided to be generous though, and gave Permann tickets for life to the Missouri Valley Conference tournament and a three-day hotel stay for next year’s event.

“Overall, today was definitely a good [experience],” Permann said. “I’m happy they gave us tickets for life and all the other stuff. Money would be great, but that’s a pretty good consolation.”
