San Francisco Giants acquire Jake Peavy in trade with Boston Red Sox
The San Francisco Giants completed a trade Saturday with the Boston Red Sox to acquire former Cy Young winner Jake Peavy in exchange for two minor league pitchers, according to the Associated Press.
The right-hander is expected to start Sunday’s game against the Dodgers at AT&T Park in place of Yusmeiro Petit, who had been scheduled in place of Matt Cain. Cain was put on the disabled list earlier this week with right elbow inflammation.
The Red Sox will receive right-hander Heath Hembree and left-hander Edwin Escobar in the deal.
Peavy (1-9) has a 4.72 ERA this season with the 2014 World Series champion Red Sox, who currently reside in the basement on the American League East.
The Red Sox are 47-56 this season and are 10½ games behind the Baltimore Orioles.
Peavy, 33, won the 2007 Cy Young award with the San Diego Padres, where he spent seven full seasons before being traded to the Chicago White Sox in 2009.
He was then dealt to the Red Sox near the trade deadline last year where he won his first World Series. The MLB trade deadline is July 31.
The Giants currently hold a half-game lead over the Dodgers in the National League West, but will play the second game of a three game series Saturday night in San Francisco.
