James Bond stuntman from 2012 London Olympics dies in accident

It was the talk of London before and after the opening ceremony for the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Queen Elizabeth II and actor Daniel Craig -- you may know him as James Bond -- collaborated on a videotaped skit that ended with a pair of stuntmen parachuting live into Olympic Stadium, one dressed as Craig, the other wearing the queen’s pink dress.

On Thursday, it was reported that the man doubling for Craig, former military officer Mark Sutton, was killed while wingsuit diving in Switzerland.

According to British newspapers, the 42-year-old jumped from a helicopter in the Grandes-Otanes region, close to the French border. A preliminary investigation suggests he struck a ridge.

“The victim, a Briton, was 42 years old. He was staying in Chamonix [in France] with 20 followers, considered among the best in the world in this discipline,” an official statement said.

A wingsuit is a special jumpsuit with fabric between the legs and under the arms that allows skydivers to soar for a limited period before deploying a parachute.

Sutton had reportedly traveled to Switzerland as the guest of a company that makes extreme sports films for the Internet.
