Watch Jayson Werth, Gio Gonzalez have angry exchange during game
It has been a disappointing season for the Washington Nationals. Picked by many to win the NL East, they are 58-60 and 14 games behind the Atlanta Braves. And now, two of their players are making headlines for getting into an argument in the dugout during a game.
TV cameras caught slugger Jayson Werth and left-hander Gio Gonzalez arguing in the home dugout during Tuesday’s game against the San Francisco Giants. It appears that Gonzalez was a little late covering first base in the top of the inning, costing the Nationals a chance at turning a double play. Werth wasn’t happy about that, and let Gonzalez know.
Pitching coach Steve McCatty even had to step in front of Gonzalez to prevent him from going after Werth.
“It stays between me and Werth,’’ Gonzalez said, while Werth did not talk to the media at all.
That left it up to Manager Davey Johnson to figure out what it was all about.
“Just a little camaraderie going on,’’ Johnson said. ‘’Jayson sometimes can get a little vocal. He thought Gio was a little late covering first.”
