SI report accuses Oklahoma State football of widespread corruption

Another day, another scandal, and this one isn’t really being contested.

In fact, Oklahoma State Athletic Director Mike Holder apologized to the Big 12 in advance of a five-part investigative story by Sports Illustrated on major misconduct within the Cowboys’ football program.

“I apologize to all the athletic directors in the conference for what’s about to happen, for what’s about to be said about a member,” Holder said. “That reflects on everyone, all our brothers and peers, and we’re remorseful about that.”

A team of SI writers spent 10 months on the series and much of the information is “on the record.” It is unclear what wrath the school will face because many of the allegations do not fall within the NCAA’s four-year statute of limitations.

Many of the allegations predate the arrival of current coach Mike Gundy in 2005 and focus on the rise of a program under Les Miles, the school’s coach from 2001 through 2004.

Miles is now the head coach at LSU.

“I can tell you this, we have always done things right,” Miles said after LSU’s win on Saturday.

The series details widespread payment to players, drug use, academic misconduct and school hostesses providing sex to recruits.

Miles took over an Oklahoma State program coming off a 3-8 year and promised to turn things around.

“We’re going to win and we’re going to do things my way,” the SI story quotes Miles as saying in December 2000.

After going 4-7 his first season, Miles led Oklahoma State to 8-5 and a bowl game in 2002. The success has continued under Gundy, who took over after Miles left for LSU.

Oklahoma State finished 12-1 two years ago and defeated Stanford in the Fiesta Bowl.
