Phil Mickelson survives late wobble to win Scottish Open
The finish wasn’t perfect, but Phil Mickelson is no longer 0-for-Great Britain.
The world’s eighth-ranked golfer suffered a three-putt bogey on the 72nd hole but rebounded to win a playoff with Branden Grace and capture the Scottish Open at Castle Stuart Golf Links on Sunday.
The 17-under victory marked Mickelson’s first individual title in Britain and serves as an encouraging tune-up for the British Open later this week.
“I have been coming here for some time and had some opportunities and I almost let it slip away today,” Mickelson said. “To come out on top was terrific.”
Needing a par five to secure victory in regulation play, Mickelson suffered that bogey on No. 18. But on the first playoff hole -- on the 18th again -- he hit a wedge to within inches of the cup and tapped in for the winning birdie.
“I was so mad at myself for mentally losing my focus that I came out on that 18th pretty focused to make a four,” he said.
Henrik Stenson, who started Sunday with the lead, and J.B. Hansen finished in a tie for third at 15 under.
