Robert Griffin III leaves game after he’s injured on a run
Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III can run the football. It’s one of the more exciting elements of his game.
Sunday, it cost him.
On third-and-goal at the three-yard line, about halfway through the third quarter, Griffin rolled right against Atlanta and tried to tuck the ball and run. While he was in the process of being tackled along the sideline, he was drilled in the head by Falcons linebacker Sean Weatherspoon. It was a legal hit because Griffin was technically a runner at the time, although the play was recorded as a sack for a loss of two yards.
Griffin lay face down on the turf for a few moments before groggily climbing to his feet and walking slowly across the field to the Washington sideline. He sat on the Redskins bench, where the medical staff stitched his chin. He was walked to the locker room, briefly reemerged, then headed back inside.
Fellow rookie Kirk Cousins replaced Griffin at quarterback, and quickly made an impact. On his second series, Cousins found Santana Moss for a 77-yard touchdown down the middle.
