Two-time champion Chad Reed wins supercross race at Angel Stadium

Chad Reed held off another two-time champion, James Stewart, to win the supercross race at Angel Stadium on Saturday night.

With the victory in the 20-lap main event of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series, Reed joined Stewart and the legendary Jeremy McGrath for the most career wins in Anaheim with eight.

The 31-year-old Reed now has 42 career wins overall.

“I got 41 of these [previous victories] and they all came a lot easier than this one,” Reed said. “I’m just proud.”

Stewart finished second, followed by rookie Ken Roczen, Justin Brayton, reigning champion Ryan Villopoto and 2010 champion Ryan Dungey.

Dungey took the early lead but fell on the seventh lap, enabling Stewart to take over first place. “I just made a mistake,” Dungey said.

On the 15th lap, Villopoto caught Stewart but then the riders bumped and Villopoto and his Kawasaki fell in a heap.

Stewart maintained the lead until the 18th lap when Reed passed him.

Supercross is the stadium version of off-road motorcycle racing, or motocross. This was the third race of the season and the second of three season stops in Anaheim for the 17-race series.

Roczen won the season opener Jan. 4 at Angel Stadium, and the series returns to Anaheim for its final visit of the year Feb. 1.

In the sport’s second-level “supercross lites” division, Cole Seely of Lake Elsinore won the 15-lap main event Saturday night. Jason Anderson, who won the first two races of the season, finished second.
