Houston offensive lineman David Quessenberry diagnosed with lymphoma

Houston Texans offensive lineman David Quessenberry will be placed on the NFL’s non-football illness list while he undergoes treatment for lymphoma, the team announced Tuesday.

The second-year player out of San Jose State had been experiencing the symptoms of a chest cold -- including fatigue and a persistent cough -- before suffering shortness of breath at Texans practice June 3, according to a statement from Rep 1, the sports marketing and public relations firm that represents Quessenberry.

He was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins T lymphoblastic lymphoma later that day and immediately began treatment.

After being drafted in the sixth round last year, Quessenberry showed promise during training camp and the preseason before missing all of the regular season with a broken foot.

“He is a fighter and a courageous young man and we look forward to his full and complete recovery,” Texans executive vice president and general manager Rick Smith said Tuesday of Quessenberry. “We will continue to support him and his family and look forward to his return to the team.“

Rep 1 echoed the sentiments: “ David is extremely positive and determined to win this fight against cancer.”

Quessenberry has yet to publicly address his illness, but his two most recent tweets say plenty. On the day he was diagnosed, he wrote: “It can’t be said enough. Every day is a blessing.”

The next day he retweeted someone’s post of Jeremiah 29:11: “ ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’ ”
