Pop violinist Vanessa-Mae wins apology, settlement from international ski federation

Pop violinist and elite skier Vanessa-Mae has won the battle to clear her name of accusations that she participated in manipulating races to qualify for the 2104 Sochi Olympics.

International ski officials issued an apology to her in a brief statement on Wednesday.

The federation also announced that it had agreed to an out-of-court settlement that she “intends to pay to a charity of her choice.”

Shortly after the Sochi competition, officials claimed the British skier -- who competed for her native Thailand under the name Vanessa Vanakorn -- had qualified through last-minute races in Slovenia created and manipulated specifically to get her the necessary points.

The ski federation banned her for four years and suggested that her results be erased from the Sochi records.

Last year, the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled the ban should be overturned because it could find no evidence she knew of any wrongdoing. But the judicial body confirmed that the races were fixed and that she should remain ineligible for the 2014 Games, where she finished 11 seconds behind the rest of the field in the giant slalom.

Away from sports, Vanessa-Mae is internationally known as a musician who has sold millions of records.
